Bobi Bosson is a multidisciplinary artist with an emphasis in printmaking. However, when she first went to college she majored in performing arts later realizing that it wasn’t the route for her. She planned to become an animator, but she realized that she loved the illustration aspect more, as it was more detailed and “finished”. This passion eventually led her into graphic design. While many of her pieces touch on topics that can be political and offer social commentary Bosson does not define herself as an activist, but rather a person who wants to educate. Her triad of passion includes painting, sculpting, and printmaking. She was inspired by Monet and Degas because of their impressionistic style and their use of color. She would later receive her Bachelors of Art from Cal State Channel Islands.
One of Bosson’s pieces is “Come at me Bro”, which is a ceramic bust. It is a Ceramic Screen Print that is 27”x19”x11”. While the sculpture is not life-size it is still rather big. The bust is in the shape of a woman’s body with the dominant features of a woman emphasized. The bust is quite curvy and has breasts that are of uneven size and shape. Since it is made of ceramic the piece appears to be porous and the color of natural unpainted ceramic after being fired. Bosson draped barbed wire around the bust, as well as roses that frame the vaginal area which adds stunning detail. Also something different about this piece is that instead of it having a glaze, there is print on it, which is really unique. Much of the color is quite neutral and colors a natural scheme. It is a very fascinating piece to look at and is pleasing to the eye
Bosson created this piece as an homage to female artists. She wanted to recognize the women who have helped her shape her journey. There is so much significance to this piece and it contains so much meaning. While this process did take her several tries to complete it came out well. In her pipe she appropriated certain pieces of work and incorporated iconic art movements that spoke to her. Many of the designs that are printed on the bust are collages from other female artists. This is a great representation of a collaborative piece that signifies women in art. The bust itself is the shape of a woman’s body, however it is not the shape that many would see as beautiful based on what is portrayed over social media. The piece is a great symbol that speaks on the topic of beauty. It is so great that it won an award.
This piece is very meaningful. It holds so much power especially since it was a piece produced by women. The shape of the bust itself already has so much influence and can bring confidence to women who feel as though their bodies are ugly. It recognizes that beauty comes in any shape and size. When looking at this piece instead of seeing a weirdly shaped, they see themselves as a work of art and can find the beauty within themselves. I believe that this paints a strong message to love yourself no matter how society expects a person to look. It is incredibly inspiring and makes me feel confident.
